Job Description

ROLE

We are seeking a Senior Biologist to provide highly specialized scientific and technical support to a National Institutes of Health (NIH) research laboratory within the Epithelial Signaling and Transport Section in Bethesda, MD. The work focuses on epithelial biology, calcium signaling, endoplasmic reticulum–plasma membrane (ER–PM) junction organization, and ion channel regulation, with direct application to ongoing and planned NIH intramural research projects.

This is a senior, part-time, hands-on role that requires immediate proficiency in advanced imaging, molecular biology, and quantitative analysis. The selected candidate will work independently, provide mechanistic insight to complex biological questions, and integrate into an established NIH research environment. This role requires an experienced scientist who can perform the required techniques from day one, with no ramp-up period .

Apply today!

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design, execute, and analyze independent experimental studies related to epithelial signaling, calcium dynamics, ER–PM junction behavior, and ion channel function
  • Perform advanced live-cell and high-resolution fluorescence imaging, including TIRF and confocal microscopy, and apply specialized techniques (e.g., FRET, Z-scan, etc.)
  • Conduct quantitative analysis of imaging and experimental datasets using ImageJ/Fiji, GraphPad Prism, and related analysis tools
  • Apply advanced molecular and biochemical techniques (e.g., Western blotting, co-immunoprecipitation, surface biotinylation, molecular cloning, PCR, and siRNA-mediated gene knockdown)
  • Independently troubleshoot complex experimental workflows and interpret mechanistic signaling data
  • Manage mouse colonies in compliance with institutional and federal animal care requirements (e.g., genotyping, tissue collection, surgical procedures, and euthanasia)
  • Prepare publication-quality figures, datasets, and written scientific summaries for manuscripts, presentations, and internal scientific meetings
  • Maintain thorough, accurate, and reproducible electronic laboratory documentation
  • Train and mentor post-baccalaureate fellows and other laboratory staff in advanced laboratory and imaging techniques

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS

  • Expertise in epithelial biology, calcium signaling, ion channel regulation, and/or ER–PM junction dynamics
  • Proven, independent proficiency with TIRF and confocal microscopy, live-cell imaging, and quantitative image analysis
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and contribute scientific judgment at a senior level
  • Strong written communication skills

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE

  • 8+ years of hands-on biomedical research experience in an academic, government, or industry laboratory environment
  • Extensive experience with molecular and biochemical techniques (e.g., cloning, Western blotting, co-immunoprecipitation, surface biotinylation, and gene manipulation)
  • Experience contributing to manuscripts, figures, or scientific reports

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE

  • Experience integrating advanced in vitro or human-relevant model systems into mechanistic biological research
  • Prior experience supporting or collaborating with NIH or other federal intramural research programs
  • Record of authorship or substantial contribution to peer-reviewed scientific publications

REQUIRED EDUCATION

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology or a related life sciences field

PREFFERED EDUCATION

  • Master’s degree or PhD in biological sciences, bioengineering, or a related discipline
  • Graduate-level training in regenerative or stem cell biology (e.g., iPSC culture, organoid, or tissue-engineered models)
