Turkey/Syria Earthquake
Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu.
This week, a devastating earthquake struck the border regions of Turkey and Syria, causing widespread destruction and leaving many people homeless and without resources. The magnitude was reported to be 6.9 on the Richter scale, and the epicentre was in the city of Qamishli, situated in the northeast of Syria.
The earthquake was felt across the region, with tremors being recorded in both Turkey and Syria. Reports of damages to buildings and homes, as well as casualties and injuries, started to surface soon after the incident. In Turkey, the cities of Kilis and Gaziantep were the most severely affected, with the death toll rising to over 50 and at least 1000 people injured. In Syria, Qamishli was the worst hit, with at least 200 people reported dead and at least 1000 injured. The death toll from the Turkey-Syria earthquakes has passed 21,500. At least 18,342 people have been killed in Turkey, according to the country’s officials.[3]
Search and rescue efforts are still underway, but they are facing tough conditions with thousands of collapsed buildings and freezing temperatures [2]. The United Nations is “exploring all avenues” to get supplies to north-western Syria, and it released $25 million from its emergency fund to help kick-start the humanitarian response in Turkey and Syria [2]. 1,846 people have been rescued in Hatay province as of Tuesday evening [1]. The U.S. flights were also carrying 100,000 pounds of specialized equipment to cut through concrete and carry out the rough work of extracting trapped survivors [1].
This tragedy has left thousands of people in desperate need of help, and we ask Allah that He grant them relief, peace, and comfort in these difficult times. We pray to Allah to bring them ease and respite, and that He provide them with the means of healing and recovery. May Allah bless and protect those affected by this disaster, and provide them with relief, comfort, and hope. Ameen.
